After The Show
I thought when the curtain came down
and the heroine stepped up for applause
that the look on her face lay
somewhere between the tragic role
she’d played and her own reality.
I also thought, stepping out into daylight,
how lucky it is there’s a hand
either side you can hold which can
ease you back inside yourself,
otherwise you might be left there
stranded in that other world,
and quite unready for the next.
