The observant might note her presence
on so many slides,
playing peep behind the colonnades,
dancing down the marble pavement,
in the shadow of the triumphal arch.
Such a pretty child.
And the mother so grateful
for his help:
the souvenir tin whistle,
the icecream at the upper gate,
the way he’d taken her to find the swings
behind the hotel in Selçuk.
