Literature
(poem 16)
You can find all the World's Great Works
in the central cassette library,
they brought the lot. Only the minor voices,
were left to take their chance with the likes of me
in the hand luggage. I like minor voices
semi-precious stones: I always preferred
moonstones to diamonds, and The Moonstone
to War and Peace. Which is why I cared
to bring the old horse Lyarde, and clerk Jankin
who sang the Kyrie to Alisoun;
the scholar who stayed to milk the ducks,
and dark Mary watching the sun go down.
All the unnamed voices, vibrant
with pleasure, fear, observation, hurt.
'Wher beth they, bufore us weren? ...'
'More joy than there be stitches in my shirt ...'
Only remember how accidental
is their presence; how many were the men
as pained, as joyful, who went down in silence
and will never be heard from again.
