The simplicity of flight
(for Julie)
Your room, full of paintings, simmers down
in the evenings as you lie
on your bed watching the sky
run into itself like your colours. Sounds
disturb the corridors, notice boards
flutter like birds reluctant
to fly south and I just want
to stop you from crying again. I store
my head with comforting words but they
circle aimlessly, mingling
annoyingly and jarring
with the calm simplicity of flight. Days
pass and still they remain unsaid. Here,
in your room again, I drink
the sweet coffee but the link
is lost since the afternoon is so clear
and you have seen a pair of swallows
break loose, skimming the cold blue
sky and dodging their way through
twisted branches. Where they went you don't know
but you grin as you say that for a
second their wings framed the sun
and you felt that all was done
and all was just beginning, here today.
