This house was busy once;
now it is beautiful,
its lost and ancient life
replaced by style.
And here we are
who benefit,
you in your pale straw hat
and cotton dress,
relaxed and easy in the sun,
with time to watch the roses
climb around the windows and the door,
to feel the heat of early afternoon
absorbed by the hydrangeas and hypericum
warming the stone,
and me,
nursing the knowledge
that we must move on.
