Another Man
Another man, also from Tarsus,
(I can't remember his name now)
Was on his way to Damascus
- And quite a busy road it was too.
He also was struck by a dazzling light;
And - not surprisingly -
Fell off his horse onto the dusty roadway.
The Truth
Was being thrust upon him.
He picked himself up as best he could
And shook the dust from off his cloak
- The horse looked OK, saddle, stirrup, no problem.
Before him lay the clear-cut, self-contained town,
Its streets crossing at conclusive right angles,
Its firm, square, granite buildings
Towering like unquestionable dogmas.
Absolute truth. Good and Evil. Night and day.
But no undecided twilights ever in Damascus.
Truth and Error. Matter and spirit. Black and White.
But no uncertain hues of silvery grey in Damascus,
Never the ever-changing reflections of opal,
Like wavering shadows on a flowing river.
The man (I still can't remember his name)
Turned his back on the town and rode away,
Listening to the clippety-clop of his horse's hooves.
