“Love love love”
Last night I wrote on my white bed sheet
a black line I didn’t at first intend
but I took up my constant notebook and pen
in the early morning autumn light
and dipped the point in the vitriol
saved up through all these married years
moistened with so many blood red tears
that now I’m dry-eyed and even cruel
and I rewrote the black mark as a kind
of verse - but so unkind - and I wanted
to rip it out with no revision and send it
to my old “Love love love” for I could not find
in my patched-up heart the will to forget how
the other woman signed off her last love letter.
