Beating the Bounds
Hester among the alexanders is enchanting –
clusters of lime green stars burst above her blond head.
In our absence the path to the hollow tree had disappeared,
buried under spring’s abundance: nettles and brambles,
buttercups and alexanders. Rogation has passed
but no pole and milkwort beat these bounds,
we are the first, inching our way along the boundary
clipping the rush of may into decorum.
Horses stamp and snort behind a thicket of fresh leaf,
beyond that boys are calling a dog,
running across the new wheat, calling and whistling.
The day is turning into evening, a blue mist rising off the land.
Hannah perches in the hollow tree surveying her distance.
WE are done with clippers and secateurs,
behind us the path stretches clear.
