An Epitaph
George Gordon, Lord Byron, was one of the best;
he had movie-star looks and was always well-dressed;
a bit of a cripple, but girls didn’t care;
he collected their cherries and fine pubic hair.
A versatile player at all kinds of sport
he trained on a diet of beef-steak and port
and gambled for stakes that few could afford.
He had a short innings, but boy! How he scored!
Vernon Scannell’s latest collection is Of Love and War: New and Selected (Robson Books, 2002). Other collections include Views & Distances (Enitharmon 2000), Collected Poems 1950-1993 (Robson Books, 1993) and The Black and White Days (Robson Books, 1996). His novel, Feminine Endings, was brought out from Enitharmon in 1999.
