Guest Worker
The moon is amplified by sunflowers.
Moon-clouds waver above shadows.
The earth's underarm is sweet. Showers
all day have topped and tailed the meadows
framing the buttery stone of Cheltenham.
Along the oaty-mortar-and-honey walls,
along rebel areas of wild marjoram,
beyond the egg-white gates and lintels
strides the urban fox on his quiet quest.
He yawns in contempt at my mock whistle,
runs to paw the blood-smells, is my guess,
behind the Co-op. Then a black bristle
of garden sweeps him, inheres him.
I turn my collar inside, like one wet ear.
