Dunkirk
We are the spit and yell of the tide,
the cries in the night, the returnees.
You are the ripples of hope, the relentless
heartbeat, a sea of tears we did not shed.
We are the scarred, discarded,
counting shadows with nowhere to run.
You are the glow in the evening, the doors
that stay open, the quickening pulse.
We are the faltering notes, the sighs of
morning, birds who have lost the gift of song.
You are a lighthouse, our soul keeper, a rock
that holds the whispered breath of doves.
