An Alfred Hitchcock memorial on the site of Gainsborough Studios
I met a resident of Islington
who said ‘A vast and rusting head of steel
looms in a courtyard … Trunkless on a plinth,
where Gainsborough Studios once stood, its round
unwrinkled scalp and cheeks and baby pout
show the welder knew those features well
which still survive in countless TV reruns,
mocking fears of which he knew too much.’
The birds and blank rear windows might look down
on Hoxton’s Ozymandias; film buffs
look up to him – would still revere his craft
if none but this remained: a distant biplane
spraying crops and Cary Grant, alone
with white and waving wheat stretched far away.
