Review:
The Lores by Robert Sheppard
Language and its effect on the reader is significant with Robert Sheppard’s book ‘The Lores’. This poetry challenges the reader’s expectations, not that it is for me to say what those expectations are. However, if you read and become indignant about this collection then think again. Forget about suddenly discovering the ship on the horizon, “less real than a dream” p.69, that could take you to your ‘safe’ and ‘comforting’ destination because you may well find you are interested in staying put or perhaps after all, this is where you were situated all along. There is a musical rhythm in the language, always changeable but at its most vivid, symbolic and fearless:
She’s been crying
as she voted
buying in hyperrealities
saline fear dripped
in her jumpy
heart passing an
Elder hanging from
a lamp post…(p.9)
As usual, interesting and challenging work.
